Is CBC Gem Free in Canada? What Premium Costs and What It Adds
CBC Gem is the odd one out among Canadian streamers: you can watch most of it without paying anything, which makes the paid tier hard to size up. The question is not really whether Gem is free — it is what the $5.99 actually buys.
- Gem is free to watch in Canada with ads, with a CBC account.
- Premium costs $5.99 a month plus tax, with a seven-day trial for new subscribers.
- Premium removes ads from on-demand episodes and unlocks the CBC News Network live stream — but live streams can still carry ads.
Is CBC Gem free in Canada?
Yes. The free tier needs a CBC account, not a credit card, and it carries advertising. What you get for nothing is more than most free tiers: the on-demand library of CBC series and films, all 14 live local CBC TV channels, and the CBC News Explore, CBC Comedy and Olympic Channel live streams.
That free layer is why Gem sits in a different bracket from Crave or Netflix Canada. You are not choosing whether to have it — you are choosing whether to upgrade it.
What does CBC Gem Premium cost?
$5.99 a month plus applicable taxes. New subscribers get a free seven-day trial, and you can cancel at any point. Billing runs through the Gem apps on Roku, Fire TV, Android, Apple TV, iPad and iPhone, or through cbc.ca/gem in a browser.
For scale: that is roughly a third of what a standard Netflix Canada plan costs and well under the $14.99 a month STACKTV runs through Prime Video Channels.
What does Premium actually add?
Four things. On-demand episodes play ad-free, you get the CBC News Network live stream, some titles arrive early, and video steps up to 1080p with surround sound on compatible devices.
The News Network stream is the one that decides it for a lot of people. It is the only way to get that channel on Gem, and it is not part of the free tier.

Why do I still see ads with Premium?
Because ad-free applies to on-demand episodes, not to everything. CBC says live streams and a small number of on-demand titles may still carry ads due to existing licensing and rights requirements.
In practice that means the live local channels and the News Network stream behave like broadcast television, ads included. If you are paying mainly to skip commercials during a live feed, Premium will not do it.
What time do new episodes land on CBC Gem?
9 a.m. ET. CBC's fall release is specific about it: the first episode of every series streams on Gem from 9 a.m. ET on its premiere date, with a new episode weekly at the same time unless stated otherwise.
That is a real advantage over the broadcast schedule. A show airing at 8 p.m. on CBC is already sitting on Gem eleven hours earlier the same day. It is a different rhythm from the simulcast networks — CTV, Global and Citytv match the US air time, and titles like Survivor or Saturday Night Live arrive when the American network runs them.

Is Gem worth paying for next to the other services?
It depends on one thing: whether you want CBC News Network. Everything else Premium offers — no ads, early access, better picture — is a comfort upgrade on a library you can already watch for nothing.
If you are stacking services, Gem is the cheapest way to add Canadian originals to a lineup built around the private networks. Our week-ahead list tracks what is new across every Canadian service, and we cover release times title by title in the Amazing Race and Prime, Disney+ and Paramount+ rundowns. For the CTV competition slate, our sister site has The Traitors Canada Season 4.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a cable subscription to use CBC Gem?
No. A free CBC account is enough, and that includes the 14 live local CBC TV channels.
Does Premium include CBC News Network?
Yes, and Premium is the only way to get it on Gem. The stream itself can still carry ads.
Can I watch CBC Gem outside Canada?
No. Gem is a Canadian service and its rights stop at the border.
